How to be taken seriously as a young entrepreneur

Actions speak louder than words and this could not be more important if you are a young entrepreneur or business person. There is nothing worse than some ‘young gun’ telling an experienced successful person what to do, that they know best and how great they are.

‘’Work hard in silence and let your success be your noise’’

Here’s the thing, no one can argue results, so get results instead of talking about them. When you get a small win, stay humble. Too many young people do well on one small project and they literally think they are god’s gift. Well they’re not and guess what, there is someone right behind them waiting to knock them off that high horse.

One of the hardest things to do is to bite the bullet, hold your tongue and only do what is going to help you progress. We all have ego, I definitely do but I have the ability to lock away my ego along with my feelings and emotions and make decisions that will benefit me. Just think it will all be worth it one day.

boat quote

Get stuck in don’t be afraid to do some work, people will respect a hard worker regardless of age. Don’t ask someone to do something you are not willing to do yourself.

Dress for success

Just like a Knight puts on his armour before battle it’s important you dress yourself for your own battles. Suited and booted ready for the day. Depending on what your market is you need to dress the part.

Stay sharp, become a regular at the barbers, this will definitely pay dividends. Wear clothes that fit you, there is nothing worse than a badly fitting suit and to anyone else it will look like you’re in your dads old suit and you will lose credibility no matter how hard you work.

It’s also important to keep it simple when dressing for business. A nicely fitted business suit, dark greys and navy are always a winner, with a crisp white shirt and simple tie.

They say the devil is in the detail, keep those shoes shined, shirts ironed and trousers pressed. If you look the part, you’ll feel it.

As soon as I put my suit on I feel ready for anything, it’s exciting.

The best piece of advice I was ever given was ‘’Dress like the cleaner, get treated like the cleaner, Dress like the boss, you get treated like the boss’’ .

dress quote(1)

Okay so this is the single most important thing in your life. You have to be self-aware. Know who you are, what your strengths are but more importantly, know your weaknesses. Delusion will end in failure.

If you are not self aware and real with yourself, you can’t improve. I do a self-business plan I ask myself questions and answer them honestly and for myself and if I don’t like the answer to one of the questions guess what? I work on that until I like the answer.

If you want to become more self aware, you can request my self aware business plan by emailing absolutely free just for reading this blog.

Have an opinion

Believe it or not no one wants a yes man. In conversation it’s important to have your own ideas and don’t be afraid to say if you don’t agree with something. But know your boundaries and when to shut up. A great speaker isn’t someone who does the most talking, it’s the person who does the best talking and knows when to stop.

Don’t make conversation about you, make it about them. People will be more interested in you if you invest your interests in them.

You can disagree with what someone is saying, but don’t do it in a condescending way as that will lead to arguments, as Dale Carnegie says ‘’the only way to win an argument is to avoid one’’

In business as a young person it’s very easy to do all the above for a day, a week or even a month but the hard thing is doing it every day, forever, you need to be consistent. When your clients meet you, you need to be just as sharp as the first time they see you, do not let your standards drop.

One last thing

Don’t make promises you can’t deliver on. If you say something, do it and then build on that. Put the work in and you will see the results.
